Editorial: Top Android Phone I am looking forward to in 2021
January 01, 2021
2020 has been a rough year. It is now over. These are the top phones that I am looking forward to in 2021:
Sony Xperia 1 III
The Sony Xperia 1 II was a sleeper hit in the enthusiast space. It was one of the last flagship phones that still had the 3.5mm headphone jack, front-facing speakers, screen without any holes/notches, and physical fingerprint scanner. The major downsides were it lacked 5G in the US and a high refresh screen but had a $1200 asking price.
The Xperia 1 III looks to fix a lot of the shortcomings. Rumor has it that the Xperia 1 III will be adding a 4K high refresh screen, Snapdragon 888, and 15% brighter screen. Sony is also prototyping out an Xperia 1 III with a 12MP, 50MP, and a periscope zoom. Whether they will end up in the final release remains to be seen. The asking price will also remain $1200.
Full Rumored Spec this below:
- 📺 6.5" OLED 4K 3840 x 1644 HDR 120Hz
- 🧠 Qualcomm Snapdragon 888
- 🗃️ 8GB RAM 256GB Storage
- 📷 50 MP, Periscope Zoom
- 🔋 5000 mAh
- 🎁 IP65/IP68, 5G, Side-mounted fingerprint sensor, 15% brighter screen
- 💸 $1200 in the US
Galaxy Z Fold 3
The Galaxy Z Fold 2 improved significantly from the original Galaxy Fold. The build quality is much sturdier. The screen to body ratio is much larger. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 looks to be an even more impressive device. The biggest rumor so far is the inclusion of the s-pen. This inclusion makes a lot of sense for the Fold line. I could potentially see it swaying people who have an iPad with the Apple Pencil or people who own a Surface to switch over. I am still questioning whether people would be willing to spend the $2000 for it.
2020 was an off-year for Google. Google did not release an XL version of the Pixel 5. Google even opted to release the Pixel 4a 5G and the Pixel 5 together. Google's lineup for 2020 is all kinds of confusing. The lineup for 2021 should revert back to Google's traditional release schedule. But the biggest question that is on my mind is whether or not Google will finally upgrade the camera hardware on the Pixel line. Will Google once again propel the industry forward in the photography department? Or do they have something new up their sleeves?
There aren't many credible leaks for the Pixel 6 yet. The only ones I have heard about are a potential Pixel 5 Pro that has an under-screen camera and a Pixel foldable. Whether either of these will come to fruition is anyone's guess.
